3D Tour of Picasso’s Guernica
Guernica is a painting by Pablo Picasso. It was created in response to the bombing of Guernica, Basque Country, by German and Italian warplanes at the behest of the Spanish Civil War, on 26 April 1937. Guernica shows the tragedies of war and the suffering it inflicts upon individuals, particularly innocent civilians.
We’re highlighting today a digitally-rendered 3D tour of Picasso’s landmark work. It’s the creation of Lena Gieseke, a visual effects artist who, once upon a time, was married to the filmmaker Tim Burton.

It’s called “Rhein II” and was photographed by Andreas Gursky, and it sold on Tuesday night for $4.3 million at Christie’s. That easily broke the previous record set by Cindy Sherman’s “Untitled #96” which sold at a $3.89 million price point in May. Gursky’s photo is also the reason you should have become an art broker, like yesterday.
